This Wednesday dawned clear and bright with warm temperatures and plenty of sun.  There was work to do in the garden, of course, but somehow, this day just had "motorcycle" written all over it.

Rt 337 Opens Up the View of Blue Mountain
Last week, the ride over second ridge on New Philadelphia Road made me realize that riding the Valley and Ridge Province is all about going over the ridges, then connecting the roads in the valleys.  The roads across the ridges tend to run in the gaps - water gap if there is still a river and it is cut down to river level, wind gap if it is no longer the site of a present day river but cut by a river in the geologic past.  Delaware Water Gap is the quintessential water gap and growing up in the eastern Lehigh Valley, "water gap" meant "Delaware Water Gap".  Similarly, Wind Gap, where Rt 33 crosses Blue Mountain, was the quintessential wind gap.  It is easy to see why they are so exemplary if you view them from anywhere on South Mountain (for example traveling on Rt I 78 East) in the Lehigh Valley.

We tend to know the ridge crossing by the gap name:  Rt 611 thru Water Gap, Rt 191 over Fox Gap, Rt 33 thru Wind Gap, Rt 74 over Waggoners Gap, etc.  But it occurred to me that to fully appreciate the V&R, we should learn all of the ridge crossings.

To the east of us, Rt 309 is the major route crossing Blue Mountain.  To the west, Rt 61 cuts thru Schuylkill Gap at Port Clinton.  In between, Hawk Mountain Road crosses the folded ridge running east to west over Hawk Mountain.  We also know Gun Club Road which climbs the south side of the ridge and Y's into 309 near the top.  Are there any other crossings?

The pannable, zoomable, map-of-maps on the iPad shows one:  east of Hawk Mountain, Blue Mountain House Road crosses the ridge connecting Mountain Rd on the South and Blue Mountain Drive on the north.  Nothing to do but go take a look.

I started out with a zig-zag over the Blue Hills just for fun, then accessed the stretch of Mountain Rd by heading up Rt 337 out of Kutztown, across Stoney Run to Hawk Mountain Rd, turning onto New Bethel Church Rd, then Kirst Hill Rd.  Mountain Rd runs along the south side of Blue Mountain for a long way through our neck of the woods.  It affords a great, gray-road, east-west route from nearly every ridge crossing to the next.  I had never been on this stretch of Mountain Rd before and probably would have enjoyed it more if I had not fallen in behind a very slowly moving Yellow Freight van.

The junction with Blue Mountain House Rd was in Steinsville.  The first thing of interest was the "No Winter Maintenance" sign; the second was the end-of-pavement.  Well, it would have been better on a GS, but the stone appeared to be well graded and firmly packed and accessible to a street bike if ridden carefully, so I pressed on.  The going over the mountain was slow and careful, but I never heard banjos.

The road became Fort Franklin Rd on the north side of the ridge.  I came out the other side at Blue Mountain Drive, very close to the point where it runs into Rt 309.  Left on Blue Mountain Drive to Pine Valley Rd turned out to be a great gray-road alternative to Rt 895 for running Summer Valley which lies between first and second ridge.  It wound up dumping me into New Ringgolds on Railroad Avenue at the junction of Rt 895 and Rt 443.

Time for a pit stop.  And ominous clouds announced the possibility of thunder showers, so I added back the jacket liner (I had been running suit, no liners, over short LD comfort base layer in the high 70's/low 80's temps) and stowed the handlebar camera in the tank bag under cover.

Sure enough, Rt 895 from New Ringgolds to Hawk Mountain Rd was wet, with road spray from the big trucks, but no actual rain.  By Hawk Mountain Rd, my return route over Blue Mountain, I was back on dry roads.

Well, time to get back to those chores the quickest way, but running Rt 143 from Lenhartsville to Moselem Springs (the quickest route home) is no slouch of a ride.  Great half day of hooky and a new road discovered.

Out of the blue, Cousin John called and said, "The Triumph needs to go to Hermy's for service on the 17th.  I was thinking of taking a day off work on the 16th and coming up your way to ride around for the day ending up at Hermy's to drop the bike off at the end of the day."  An op to take a day in the middle of the week to play hooky on motorcycles?  Don't have to ask me twice; I was in in a New York second.

John got to my place by 10 and we were on the road by 10:20.  All the good people of the world were busy beaverin' away at work so it was just the two of us today.  The plan was to spend the day riding some good roads in the area, ending at Hermy's in Port Clinton before they closed at 5.  We started off riding back and forth across the Blue Hills, the highly distorted section of South Mountain that forms the eastern edge of the Oley Valley.  When we stopped briefly in Lyons for gas, John commented, "With roads like this in your backyard, why are you always so anxious to go to West Virgina?"  Well, West Virgina is its own motorcycle paradise, as reported previously, but I have to admit that living adjacent to the Blue Hills provides ample opportunity for great riding close to home whether going out for 15 minutes or for an hour.

But of course, the extended backyard includes the Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian Mountains, that geologic feature which makes up half of the great riding in West Virginia and puts some really great Pennsylvania roads within the reach of a half or full day outing for us.  So, from Lyons thru Kutztown to Virginville, up Rt 143 to Albany and Hawk Mountain Road, over Hawk Mountain (first ridge, Blue Mountain), and into the V&R.  A quick run north (on 895 East, go figure) to Rt 443 soon got us to New Philadelphia Rd, a great route over second ridge, linking in to Rt 209.  By this time we were ready for a pit stop and nav check but no opportunity presented itself until we hit Pottsville.  We pulled in to the Dunkin Donuts at the junction with Rt 61 and took the iPad (map-of-maps) in to get a cup of iced coffee and figure out bearings.  I really wanted to take John over Rt 125, one of our favorite routes across the V&R.  The question was how to get there and which direction to run it.  Turns out John had never been to Centralia, so an en-route destination was born.

After slogging our way across Pottsville, we hit the open road again and were soon in Centralia where we parked the bikes and walked up the hill to see the steam vents coming from the burning coal seam under the town that used to be.  There is a wind farm on the ridge above town and John commented that he had heard that the tip speed of the blades on those apparently languid windmills was in excess of 100 mph.  Seems impossible, but some internet research and a quick calculation on Excel tells us that on a windmill with a diameter of 100 meters (about as big as they get today) turning at 15 rpm (typical operating speeds are 10-20 rpm), the blade tips are moving at 175 mph!  Smaller diameter, lower value; more rpm, higher value, of course, but those "languidly turning blades" are rippin' right along.  And those 'mills are generating about 1 MW each.

Up around the loop through Numedia and back to Elysburg, we eventually got to Shamokin and Rt 125.  We ran Rt 125 (taking the Joiliet-Molleystown cut off) all the way to Pine Grove.  OK, you want to show off Pennsylvania roads?  That's a Pennsylvania road!  God bless the Valley and Ridge Province.

Well from there it's a quick run over 895 to Deer Lake, then south on Rt 61 to Port Clinton and Hermy's.  After filling out the paperwork and picking up a loaner bike, the day was getting long, so we beat feet for home down 61 to Rt 662 and on home.  I peeled off at Amityville and John headed down to Douglassville and the back way home.  6 hours, 200+ miles (John must have an additional 100 back and forth from his house to mine) , and some great local roads.

DAY 1
The plan was to form up early at Lowe's in Sinking Spring and get a jump on the day by slabbin' out to Carlisle for breakfast.  We hit the first snag when Tim ran afoul of a grumpy State Trooper in downtown Reading.  He (Tim) was doing serpentines within the boundaries of his traffic lane in order to scrub in the new tires that he and Dave had installed on Wednesday evening - technically not illegal but enough to catch the attention of Johnny Law.  Unfortunately, riding without registration or insurance card is technically illegal, resulting in a return trip home, trailing the trooper, to retrieve his cards and show proof of ownership and insurance.  So Tim arrived half an hour late and slightly out of sorts, so to speak.  Still, we were off by 8:00 and soon slabbin' down the Pa 'Pike - always a great road for making time - landing about an hour later at Fay's Country Kitchen in Carlisle.  Hard to stay grumpy after pancakes at Fay's!

Skies were blue, temperatures were climbing (60 to start the morning but soon up as high as 78), the road was open and we were rolling.   I 81 down the Shenandoah Valley can be ugly, filled with trucks rolling through Martinsburg, etc., and riding the Interstates is not the most engaging motorcycle activity, but today the road was fairly benign and we were having a great time just making time to one of our favorite riding areas.

Skies clouded over as we headed south and before we got to Staunton, our planned jumping off point, around 1:00, we hit rain.  In Staunton, we stopped for gas and geared up for the rain.  This included stowing the new handlebar camera in the covered tank bag, so no more pictures for today.  I put on the Frogg Toggs jacket and decided to count on the suit liner for protection on my legs.  I had the Triumph one-piece rain suit with me, but it is such a pain to get in and out of I thought I would chance the rain not being so hard.  Well, I was sort of OK, meaning I was not actually soaked by the end of the day, but at times the rain was hard enough and went on long enough that I was definitely damp inside by the time we stopped.  On a good note, I used the integral Frogg Toggs hood as a helmet liner which meant no helmet drip down the back of the neck.  I need to perfect the rain suit - I think a new pair of Frogg Toggs pants, or maybe Goretex overpants would do the trick.  That would free up the not insignificant storage space taken up by the Triumph suit, as well.

We headed over Rt 250 to Rt 678, taking it easy because of the wet roads, tendrils of wispy clouds roiling over the mountains into the high valleys as we traversed the Valley and Ridge.  We need a dry day do-over on these roads.  Like many roads in the southern Valley and Ridge Province, these are great motorcycle roads and need to be repeated when we are not slowed by the rain.

At one point we saw a very scruffy looking fox in the middle of the road.  Tim blew on by him but he (the fox) jumped out and tried to attack Dave.  He (the fox again) kind of bounced off the bike, which was moving along at a pretty good clip, rolled ass over tea kettle, picked himself up and headed back into the middle of the road to see if I wanted a piece of him.  I had to swerve to avoid hitting him straight on.  I was reminded of the Black Knight in Monty Python's King Arthur, but I suspect he was just suffering from rabies.  Good thing we were going past too fast for him to catch us.

With temperatures dropping back into the mid-60's in the rain, getting nearer to the end of day with soaked-in damp, I was running some heat.  I perked up on Rt 18 when we started to find stretches of dry road, thinking it would not be so bad to finish up under high clouds with a drying breeze.  Ha! Not to be.  Soon we hit another onslaught of heavy rain.  It just felt like an insult.  Finally on Rt 3 west of Rt 220, the rain ended allowing us a damp, but brightening, end of the day as we headed in to Pipestem State Park Resort, our resting point for Day 1.

Pipestem Resort, with a room overlooking the gorge, was a complete score.  Dave had called ahead for the reservation and got the room for $96.  [Of course he had to claim that I was over 60 to get the senior discount.  I was mortified to think that anyone would believe I am over 60!  Oh wait... 2012, 60 years after 1952...Dang, just 3 more weeks until I really am over 60.]  Room was great, view was OK, restaurant had a great buffet for 15 bucks, there was a warm indoor pool and hot sauna and a balcony in the room.  Sitting on the balcony, bellies full, muscles warmed and relaxed, we watched as the sky cleared and the stars came out, dominated by Venus, the Evening Star.  Does it get any better?

No clear evening photos of the gorge though; the camera was definitely in a bad mood after being faced into the rain at 80 mph approaching Staunton.  Leaving it open to dry overnight helped a lot and Dave suggested a quick lick with the hair drier in the morning which soon set it to rights.  Lesson for the future:  as soon as there is damp in the air, the camera goes in the bag.

DAY 2

We got up on Sunday morning to find the Gorge full of low-hanging clouds.  By 8:15, we were packed up, moved out, and ready to roll.  The sky was overcast and the temperature was in the mid-60's.  On to breakfast at Princeton.

After breakfast, we headed west.  On a previous trip, an old geezer told us "You've got two things in West Virgina, cows and coal.  Cows is on the right and coal is on the left."  Pretty soon it was obvious that we had left cows and headed into coal.

As you travel west out of the Valley and Ridge Province, you climb the Appalachian Front, a steep escarpment marking the edge of the Appalachian Plateau.   Running back and forth across the country we know so well, the Front is "that big steep hill" that we keep running into:  I 80 climbs the Front between Stroudsburg and the junction with I 380; I 84 climbs it on the long haul going east out of Milford; the waterfalls in Rickets Glen fall down the Front; and we shall see in Day 3, we dropped down the Front in the Maryland panhandle on the way home.  The Front divides the Valley and Ridge Province from the Appalachian Plateau.  The Valley and Ridge Province is the area strongly deformed by the Appalachian Orogeny, when the collision of continents caused the layers of rock to deform into folds (think I68 road cut at Sideling Hill), often so distorted as to turn the horizontal layers of rock vertical, followed by subsequent erosion of the softer layers (now the valleys) leaving the harder layers (now the ridges).  In contrast, the rock layers of the Appalachian Plateau lie nearly horizontal, as they were deposited, tilted slightly up to the east as the orogeny raised them, terminating on the east at the Front.  Streams cut valleys into the plateau, giving the appearance of mountains.  But in truth, while the Valley and Ridge Province are true mountains, deformed and raise up by continental collision, the hills and hollows to the west are valleys cut into a fairly level plateau by erosion.

So, what we found in West Virginia was:  East - cows, tilted rock planes in road cuts, twisty roads; West - coal, horizontal rock planes in road cuts, twisty roads.  The common theme is why we keep coming back.

Rt 52 following the Guyandotte River Valley was awesome.  Around mid-day, the sun had come out, temp was up to 75, and we found ourselves gassing up and asking for directions at the Danville Go-Mart:

"Can you tell us how to get to Rt 3?", Tim asked the man behind the counter.

"Well where do you ultimately want to get to?", the man asked.

"Beckley."

"Well, the quickest way to Beckley..."

"No, No, We don't want the quickest way, we want the way that is the most fun.  Twisties."

"Send them over by way of Van," said the girl at the next register.

"Van?", said the man.  "Can you get to Beckley by Van?"

"Yes, and that's where the roads are twisty," said the girl.

"Well, OK.  Go out this road to the right and when it forks at Madison, take the left past another Go-Mart and just keep going.  You'll be going up into God's country and you'll hear banjo music, so don't stop, if you know what I mean."

Off we went, left fork at Madison, "Gateway to Coal Country" by the sign, past the Go-Mart, and up Rt 85 into the mountains, past modern day coal breakers witness to the sign's promise, then near the top, left on Rt 99 East, following the sign to Beckley.

Altitude on Rt 99 peaked at 3459 ft, then dropped, twisting and turning the whole way down into the valley.  We got to the bottom and stopped, then realized that we had failed to stop for photos at the scenic overlook at the top.  Our usual "no-back-tracking" rule notwithstanding, we headed back to the top, took some token photos (including a set up shot of Dave riding thru a corner towards us), then ran the downhill leg a second time, this time with no other traffic intervening.  By consensus, this was the best piece of road on the trip.  So, a gold star to Ashley at the Danville Go-Mart for knowing what we meant by "twisties" and knowing where to find them.

Another 4 hours and 140 miles of excellent West Virginia roads heading generally east in a very wandering sort of way brought us past new baby angus calves in the fields - from coal back to cows - and eventually landed us along the Greenbriar River in Marlinton at the Greenbriar Restaurant and Lodge for the night.  Dinner was on the deck overlooking the river.  The restaurant was "dry" but a walk across the bridge to the local convenience store bagged us a couple of 24 oz cans of Dr. Yuengling's Evening Elixir which stood us in good stead for the night.  We chatted with two other bikers who rolled in for dinner and a couple of well splattered dual sport bikes (KTM 950 and a Suzuki V Strom) on their way home to Charleston.  Both bikes were sporting bumper stickers from Rella's Cafe, so we inquired, figuring if two guys were willing to disfigure their bikes over it, it must be worth a look.  "Rt 20 just outside of Hacker Valley; don't let the appearance fool you; the pie is to die for."  Well Hacker Valley is a little too far out of the way for this trip, but we'll definitely have to put that on the list for next time.

DAY 3

Day 3 started with a short backtrack up Rt 219 to reach the Highlands Scenic Byway.  Heading up into the mountains we were facing low hanging clouds.  Between 3800 ft and 4300 ft we were basically riding through thick cotton wool.  Either that or the great State of West Virginia was saving money by turning off the scenic views on the byways except on weekends.

Heading back down to the valley, we found cleared skies and warming temperatures.  We soon pulled into the local for breakfast:  nondescript sign out front, three tables, two occupied by locals eating bowls of country country gravy for breakfast.  Country gravy and biscuits, which seemed to be the house specialty, along with a pretty good cup of coffee, soon set a foundation for the day.

The remainder of the morning was a long run to the northeast on US 219, twisting and turning up the backbone  of the state, finally crossing over into the western end of the Maryland panhandle near Oakland, where we turned east on MD 135.  Around 12:30, we got caught in a fierce rain squall which forced us to stop in the open to gear up, basically climbing already slightly wet into gear while being pelted by huge raindrops at a fierce rate.  Camera back in the bag, of course, so end of pictures for the day.

Riding out from the gear up, visibility was very limited due to rain on face shields and massive road spray.  Not so limited that we could not see the warning signs however:  9% Grade; Trucks Use Lower Gear; Reduced Gear Zone; Warning! 10 MPH Curve in 4 1/2 Miles; Runaway Truck Ramp 1 Mile; All Trucks Stop 1/2 Mile - Test Brakes.....  We were headed down the Appalachian Front, that long steep hill mentioned earlier, in the worst possible visibility condition with roads totally flooded with water.  Sounds onerous, but in fact with cool heads (we went verrrry slowly) and good modern rubber (motorcycle tire technology has come a long way, especially with regard to wet road traction and water clearing) we made it half way down the mountain without incident, at which point the rain stopped, the sky cleared, the roads drained, and we thought we were living in tall cotton.  By the bottom of the hill and that onerous 10 MPH curve, we were starting to dry out and smile again.  Weather sure is fickle in the mountains. 

We soon found our way to I 68 and hit the slab for home, making it there by around 6:00 with nearly 1300 miles on the clock, new tires well scrubbed-in. chicken strips shrunk to near-zero, and smiles on our faces, already thinking about where to head next.

It's Not Just a Ride, It's and Adventure, April 29, 2012

The morning started with a light frost on the grass and windshields of the cars.  The temperature was 35 as I was dressing to head out, so I included the long LD base layer, extra Aerostitch jersey windbreak and, of course, electric jacket, plus chin fleece and medium gloves - with the electric hand grips, plenty warm riding over to form-up at 8:00.  By the time we headed towards breakfast, the sun was out and temps were up a comfortable (with heat) 40+.  We wandered up through Pine Creek valley and over Hawk Mountain.  An hour and 20 minutes of riding got us to Nequehoning fire house with a good cup of coffee and made-to-order breakfast for $7 - can't beat it with a stick.

2 hours+ of lies, tall tales, future plans, and firehouse coffee finally got us back on the road.  We took a loop to the north and west through the valley-and-ridge with temps climbing up into the mid-60's, pretty perfect riding conditions.  The trees are coming into spring leaf, a week or two behind us north of the mountain.  Lilacs are past prime, and azaleas are at their peak, especially farther north.

It might have been an uneventful day, but then the "adventure" set in.  It started when Dave passed a slow car on his F650 GS, using all the ponies.  Afterward, acceleration seemed slow and uneven; something was definitely amiss.  Then Tim started having trouble with corner lines, leading us to pull over in a parking lot at the junction of Rts 895 and 183.

Tim had picked up a piece of metal in his rear tire, which was nearly flat.  Dave's chain had some very stiff links and the teeth on his rear sprocket were all distorted from the pull of the chain, looking more like shark's teeth than  a drive sprocket.  Meanwhile, my bike started acting up, refusing to start intermittently - either nothing at all when the button was pressed or starter kicking in then quitting immediately before the engine caught.















Dave's tire plug kit was handily stored in the side bag of his Triumph, sitting home in the garage.  Luckily, following my run-in with the fencing staple last summer, I had bought a tire plug kit and portable, battery driven compressor.  And they were handily stored in the side bag of my one and only, so out they came.  It took two tries with the new-fangled plug system, but we got one in and were slooowly pumping up the tire with the portable compressor when a local resident came over to see if we needed any help.  Turns out he worked in the auto body shop whose parking lot we had landed in and was glad to turn on the compressor for us.  With the full scale compressor, the tire was soon up to 40 psi.  It appeared to have a slow leak - might not have seated the new-style plug firmly enough - but good enough to get home.   So with Dave's chain loose and rattling - not much else to be done at that point - and Tim watching the tire pressure, once I managed to get my bike started, we limped on home.

At Tim's house, we loaded up his two new tires on the back of Dave's and my bikes to take them down to Dave's house so they can be changed when Tim rides over some evening this week.  



Dave will have to ride one of his Triumphs until he gets a new sprocket set and chain installed on the F650.


After perusal of various threads on the internet, I determined that my starting problems stem from the computer controlled interlock system.  Seems the gear sensor on the transmission is slightly out of calibration; with the bike in neutral, and "N" indicated on the display, whenever the starter motor starts drawing current the sensor sends a "2" signal (the sensor is a variable resistor that moves as the gears are changed, may be affected by the voltage drop due to started motor load) which flashes briefly on the display.  If the kickstand is down or the clutch lever out, the computer immediately kills the starter because it thinks the bike is in gear.  This is the cause of the starter-kicks-in-then-quits syndrome.  The only way to start the bike is to put the kickstand up and pull in the clutch so it is allowed to start in gear.  HOWEVER, the computer needs to confirm that the clutch and side stand switches are working, so if you put the stand up or pull the clutch in before turning on the ignition, it refuses to acknowledge the switch and prevents to bike from starting, the nothing-happens-when-you-press-the-button syndrome.  Now that I know the correct sequence, I can start the bike reliably, even with this problem.

Following advice from the net, I disconnected the transmission sensor, and examined the plug for corrosion (it looked OK), cycled the ignition on and off with the sensor disconnected, then reconnected, after spraying the plug with WD-40.  I started the bike and took it out to run it through the gears.  This appears to have solved the problem.  Apparently, the computer can tell which gear the bike is in from engine RPM and road speed.  Turning on the ignition with the sensor disconnected tells the computer that it needs to recalibrate the sensor, so the next time it finds the sensor connected, it determines which resistance values from the sensor correspond to which gears based on the engine and road speeds.  Well, anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
